Each week we’re looking at some of the most important factors when it comes to ranking on search engines. Last week, we talked about title and meta tags, and this week we’re going to talk about H1 and H2 tags.
What are H1 tags?
You should only use one H1 tag per page. Your H1 tag should tell both users and search engines what the page is about. Including more than one H1 tag can cause confusion, mostly to search engines, about what your page is really about, and which search terms it should rank for. This could have a negative effect on your search engine rankings.
There is no character limit for H1 tags but try to be concise. You want to sum up the page’s content without losing the reader’s interest. The recommended length for an H1 tag is 20-70 characters.
What is the difference between H1 and H2 tags?
Usually, H1 tags have a larger font size than H2 tags. H1 tags are often used for the page title and H2 tags are used as subheadings. While there is usually only one H1 tag on a page, there are often multiple H2 tags. There is no limit on how many H2 tags you should include on a page.
It is important to include keywords and phrases in H2 tags to further help search engines understand what your page is about. H2 tags provide a good opportunity to include synonyms of and variations on keywords that you want to target.
What are the other header tags?
There are six types of header tag, H1 through to H6. Traditionally, each one gets smaller in font size from H1 to H6. Aside from H1 tags, all other header tags can be used multiple times on a page. H2 through to H6 tags can all be used as subheadings to organise your page content. H1 tags are the most important for SEO and H6 tags are the least important.
In conclusion, H1 and H2 tags are important for helping both search engines and users to understand what your pages are about. Other header tags can also be used to break up large amounts of text and make your page easier to read.
