What is Google My Business?

In Google’s own words, ‘Google My Business is a free tool that allows you to promote your Business Profile and business website on Google Search and Maps.’ Google My Business is designed for businesses with a physical location to inform potential customers in their local area about their opening hours, contact details, and more.

Google My Business listings can be displayed on the search engine results page or on the maps results. They are usually shown when a user makes a location-specific query or searches directly for your business name. For example, searching for ‘hairdresser near me’ or ‘hairdresser Watford’ could show a GMB listing.

If your business serves customers in a specific geographical area, then having a Google My Business listing is essential for attracting new customers.

How Do I Create A Google My Business Profile?

Firstly, you should check if your business already has a GMB profile. If your business is well-established, then there may already be a listing and you just have to claim it. Click here and enter the name of your business to check. Once you have claimed your listing, you will be able to manage it in exactly the same way as if you had created it.

If your business doesn’t have a listing, then you can click the ‘Add your business to Google’ button to create one. You will be asked for information such as the business name, address, and contact details.

You will then have to verify your business listing. The most common way to verify your account is by postcard. Google will send you a postcard to your business address with a code that you have to enter on the GMB website. Google will allow some businesses to verify by phone or email, but this is not available to most businesses.

Once your account has been verified, your listing will be eligible to be shown in search results. You should try to fill in as much information on your GMB profile as possible to increase the chances of Google showing it to searchers. Having a complete listing will also be more useful to potential customers and make them more likely to use your services.

It is also important to keep your profile up to date. This includes making sure all information is correct, updating your opening hours for bank holidays, and adding new posts and photos.

Your customers can also leave reviews or ask questions through your GMB listing. Be sure to reply so your customers feel appreciated.

Can I see how many people viewed my Google My Business listing?

Once your profile is up and running, Google My Business can show you insights about how many times your listing has been seen. Go to your Google My Business account and click on Insights from the menu.

Here, you can see how many times your listing was shown to users. This is broken down into Direct and Discovery. Direct tells you how many people saw your GMB listing when searching for your business name or address. Discovery tells you how many people saw your listing when searching for a category, product or service.

You can also see the exact queries that people used and what actions were taken by users who saw your listing. It can also show you some insights about other businesses like yours. For example, how many photos they have on average and how many views they get.

Setting up a Google My Business profile is quick and easy. It can help potential customers in your area to discover your business and as such, is a must have for most businesses.
