Over the past couple of months, we’ve been looking at different ranking factors. As you might know, Google has over 200 ranking factors that it looks at when deciding where to rank a website. We’ve already looked at title tags, meta descriptions, headings, keywords, and backlinks. Today, we’re going to take a look at relevance.

What is Relevance?

In terms of SEO, relevance deals with how well a website’s content relates to a search term. Having relevant content on your website is important for search engines. It helps them to decide how high your website will appear in the search results for different search terms.

There are multiple factors taken into account when a search engine determines the relevance of a page to a given search query. These include:

  • Page Title – As we mentioned in a previous blog, matching your page title to a keyword you want to rank for is good practice.
  • Body Text – The most obvious and most important factor is the content in the body of your page. If your page content matches the search term well, then your page is more likely to rank.
  • Images – Image alt text is important in order to make your website accessible to all users, but it also serves another purpose. Descriptive alt text which includes keywords will help search engines to understand what the images are of and how well they relate to different search terms.
  • Language – Search engines will always prioritise content which is in the same language as the search term.
  • Location – If the user includes a geographical location in their search term, the search engine will look for pages which mention that location or businesses which are based in that location.

In order to keep your content relevant, it is often better to cover a single topic in great detail rather than giving a general overview of several topics. The more topics you cover on a page, the less clear it is what the page is about.

As well as helping search engines to understand what your page is about, writing relevant content will mean visitors to your website are not disappointed. Achieving high search engine rankings is only beneficial to your business if visitors like what they see when they click on your website. User experience is as important as search engine rankings.

In conclusion, content relevance is an important ranking factor. Keeping your content relevant to the keywords you are targeting will increase your chances of ranking highly on search engines and ensure your website visitors are satisfied.
